                                             Why I chose to do A Level English Literature

I chose to study English Literature here at East Norfolk becuase I enjoyed studying the subject whilst at school. The other main reason was that I fancied more of a challnege and a wider knowledge of English Literature.

I decided to take this subject further because I enjoyed the novels I studied during my GCSEs. Some of the novels we studied during school were Of Mice and Men and The Woman in Black. I thoroughly enjoyed the study of these two books and this inspired me to study English Literature at a higher level. Of Mice and Men was set in 1930s America and had key issues within the novel such as sexism, racism and segregation during this period. We also got an insight into the great depression and how this inspired Steinbeck to write this novel. The Woman in Black was also an interesting novel to study, it is within the horror genre. This novel highlighted key factors such as friendship and loneliness. Susan Hills writing style was that of a Gothic/horror nature which added to the eeriness of this novel. We also got the chance to go and see the theater version of The Woman in Black this was just as good as the book. We also studied some poems from the character and voice section of the poetry anthology. In this we looked at how character's were shaped and represented throughout certain poems and this also was interesting to study. So mainly the course content that we studied at GCSE was my main influence in which to carry on English Literature to A Level.

Another influence is that I am keen to study it at university as well. This is another reason why I wanted to pick A level English Literature so that I am able to achieve this. From hopefully doing an English Literature degree at university, I then hope to go into fields of either teaching English abroad or to hopefully become a professional journalist working within the field of worldwide corresponding. I believe that English Literature A level and an English Literature degree will help me to achieve this because of the creative side to the subject but also the analytically side in which you have to apply for my certain desired career.

And lastly I was interested in the course content of English Literature at A level. I especially look forward to the study of the novel The Great Gatsby as I have never read this book before. I also believe that it will be interesting to study some American Literature, especially on of the greatest novels ever to of been written during American History. I am really looking forward to studying literature from different cultures such as Dancing at Lughnasa which is set in Ireland and the welsh retrospective poems which are set in Wales.
